Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, emphasizing that Democrats represent the “party of real freedom.” He reflected on the historical significance of 250 years ago when patriots in Philadelphia declared their independence and began a journey of self-determination.
Shapiro criticized former President Donald Trump, describing him as “a man with no guardrails.” He pointed out that while Trump may present himself as a champion of freedom, his actions do not align with true liberty. Shapiro highlighted the restrictions on education and women’s rights, arguing that true freedom cannot involve limiting what children can read or dictating women’s choices about their bodies. He stated, “it sure as hell isn’t freedom to say you can go vote, but he gets to pick the winner.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered the keynote address, formally accepting the Democratic vice presidential nomination. Other notable speakers included former President Bill Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The theme for Day 3 of the DNC focused on “A Fight for Our Freedoms,” with the party underscoring Vice President Kamala Harris’s commitment to safeguarding American freedoms and characterizing Trump as a threat to those liberties. Harris will officially accept the Democratic nomination on the final day of the convention.
Shapiro was considered a strong candidate for Harris’s running mate but ultimately supported Walz’s nomination, calling him a “strong addition to the ticket.” The two recently held their first joint campaign event in Philadelphia, where Walz praised Shapiro, saying, “Pennsylvania, I know you know this, but my God, what a treasure you have in Josh Shapiro.” At the same event, Shapiro expressed his pride in serving as governor, stating, “I love being your governor.”
