Delta Air Lines faced significant disruptions on Monday as it continued to recover from a severe global software outage that affected its operations over the weekend. The airline canceled around 1,300 flights and delayed another 1,600 on Sunday, which followed the cancellation of over 3,500 Delta and Delta Connection flights between Friday and Saturday.

As of early Monday morning, approximately 626 flights were canceled by Delta, while 144 experienced delays, representing about 20% of its planned operations for the day. In contrast, American Airlines reported only 38 flight cancellations and 155 delays, accounting for about 5% of their planned flights.

The chaos was attributed to a flawed software update initiated by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike late Thursday, which impacted Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. This glitch left numerous corporate users unable to access systems, leading to what is commonly recognized as the “Blue Screen of Death.” Various sectors, including healthcare, delivery services, retail, and finance, felt the ripple effects, but airlines suffered the brunt of the impact, with over 46,000 flights delayed and more than 5,000 canceled on Friday alone.

Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, expressed remorse for the disruption, stating that canceling flights is a last resort and assuring that the airline is committed to reconnecting affected passengers. Delta has since implemented a travel waiver allowing customers to change flights without charge and has provided meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transportation as compensation.

Moreover, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg highlighted that Delta received numerous complaints regarding its management of the crisis. Buttigieg emphasized the necessity for Delta to ensure timely refunds, free rebooking, and appropriate compensation for meals and overnight accommodations for stranded travelers.
