Delta Air Lines faced significant disruptions on Monday as it continued to struggle with the aftermath of a global software outage that had grounded and delayed flights worldwide. The Atlanta-based airline canceled approximately 1,300 flights and delayed around 1,600 on Sunday alone, according to FlightAware data. Over the weekend, Delta had canceled more than 3,500 flights, which included those operated by Delta Connection between Friday and Saturday.

As of early Monday morning, Delta had canceled 626 flights, which accounted for around 20% of its scheduled operations for that day, alongside 144 delayed flights. In contrast, American Airlines reported only 38 canceled flights and 155 delays, representing about 5% of its operations.

The disruption was caused by a failed software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike that took place late Thursday. This update negatively impacted Microsoft’s Windows operating systems, leading to a loss of access for corporate users and resulting in various issues, including the notorious “Blue Screen of Death.” The airline industry, particularly Delta, was severely affected, which contributed to a staggering 46,000 flight delays and 5,171 cancellations on Friday.

Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian acknowledged the challenges of canceling flights, expressing regret for the impact on travelers. He emphasized that the airline prioritizes connecting people and recognizes the frustrations caused by travel disruptions. To assist affected customers, Delta has issued a travel waiver allowing for free flight changes, as well as providing meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transportation.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg shared on social media that the department received numerous complaints regarding Delta’s management of the situation. He asserted that Delta is obligated to offer refunds, free rebooking, and timely reimbursements for food and lodging expenses to customers who faced inconveniences. Buttigieg stressed that no one should have to sleep in an airport or wait indefinitely for customer service support.
