Delta Airlines has issued a warning to customers regarding potential changes to long-haul flight schedules departing from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) due to a fuel shortage caused by a leaking pipeline. The airline’s announcement comes during a particularly busy travel season, with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching.
In a press release shared on Sunday, Delta advised that long-haul flights scheduled through Friday may be affected by necessary adjustments owing to the reduced availability of jet fuel. Passengers flying out of SEA through November 28 are encouraged to regularly check their flight status for updates regarding any changes.
For those needing to reschedule their flights, Delta has outlined specific guidelines. Tickets must be reissued before December 17 to avoid any fare differences. Passengers who make changes after this date may face additional charges, although the fee for changing travel dates will be waived. Affected customers also have the option to cancel their flights and apply the value of their unused tickets toward future travel plans.
Meanwhile, BP crews are actively working to locate the source of the pipeline leak, which was initially reported last week. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson visited the site over the weekend where approximately 200 feet of the pipeline has been excavated. However, the exact location of the leak has not yet been determined. In response to the situation, Ferguson has signed an emergency proclamation, facilitating increased truck deliveries of jet fuel to SEA. Additionally, the Port of Seattle has directed airlines to maximize fuel loads in their aircraft for incoming flights.
