The Department of Transportation is currently investigating Delta Air Lines to ensure that it is properly addressing consumer concerns amid ongoing flight cancellations following a recent global tech outage.
Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg stated that all airline passengers deserve fair treatment and that he will work to uphold this right. He mentioned that the department had received numerous complaints regarding Delta’s response to the technology disruptions.
Delta, headquartered in Atlanta, has faced challenges in fully resuming its operations after a problematic software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike last Thursday, which affected various businesses worldwide. This flaw impacted Microsoft’s Windows operating systems, leaving many corporate users without access to essential systems, with some encountering the infamous “Blue Screen of Death.”
The incident had a widespread impact, affecting multiple industries, including healthcare, delivery services, retail, and finance. Airlines and airports were particularly hard-hit, with over 46,000 flight delays and more than 5,100 cancellations reported on Friday alone, according to FlightAware data. Delta experienced the most significant disruptions, canceling approximately 3,500 flights over Friday and Saturday, and over 2,500 more on Sunday and Monday, alongside nearly 3,441 delays. On Tuesday, an additional 738 flights faced cancellations or delays.
Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian expressed regret over the situation, stating that canceling flights is always a last resort and not a decision taken lightly. He apologized to those affected and emphasized Delta’s commitment to connecting the world, acknowledging the difficulties caused by travel disruptions.
Bastian further explained that Delta relies heavily on Microsoft Windows for various applications, including crew tracking tools that faltered during the system outage. To assist customers, Delta has implemented a travel waiver allowing flight changes without fees, along with offering meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transportation options.
