The Department of Transportation is examining Delta Air Lines to ensure it is upholding consumer rights amid continuing flight cancellations following a recent global tech outage.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated on social media that all airline passengers deserve fair treatment, emphasizing that his department received “hundreds of complaints” regarding Delta’s response to the tech issues.
Delta, based in Atlanta, has faced significant operational challenges after a problematic software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected businesses globally. This update created a defect in Microsoft’s Windows operating systems, which disrupted access for corporate users and led to shutdowns, including the infamous “Blue Screen of Death.”
The incident impacted nearly every major industry, with airlines and airports experiencing some of the most significant disruptions. On Friday alone, over 46,000 flights were delayed, and more than 5,171 were canceled, according to FlightAware, with Delta experiencing the worst of it.
Delta reported canceling approximately 3,500 flights over the weekend, followed by over 2,500 cancellations on Sunday and Monday, along with 3,441 delayed flights. As of Tuesday, FlightAware noted that 738 flights had been either canceled or delayed.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian issued an apology to those affected, stating, “Canceling a flight is always a last resort, and something we don’t take lightly.” He acknowledged the challenges travelers face during such disruptions, stressing Delta’s commitment to connecting the world.
Bastian indicated that Delta relies on numerous applications utilizing Microsoft Windows, including tools for tracking crew assignments, which were hampered by the system outage. To assist affected customers, Delta has implemented a travel waiver allowing flight changes at no charge, as well as providing meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transportation options.
