The Department of Transportation is currently investigating Delta Air Lines to ensure it is adequately addressing consumer rights amid a wave of flight cancellations triggered by a global tech outage last week. Following numerous complaints regarding Delta’s response to the situation, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of treating airline passengers fairly in a recent social media statement.
Delta Air Lines has faced challenges in restoring operations after a flawed software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike resulted in widespread technical issues across various industries. Notably, Microsoft’s Windows operating systems were severely impacted, causing significant disruptions for corporate users, including an infamous “Blue Screen of Death” error.
The airline industry was particularly hit hard during this incident. According to FlightAware, over 46,000 flights experienced delays on Friday alone, with Delta being one of the most affected carriers. Delta canceled around 3,500 flights on Friday and Saturday, and the cancellations continued with more than 2,500 flights called off on Sunday and Monday, along with additional delays. As of Tuesday, a further 738 flights faced cancellations or delays.
Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, expressed regret over the situation, affirming that canceling flights is a measure of last resort and not taken lightly. He acknowledged the challenges faced by travelers during these disruptions and reiterated Delta’s commitment to connecting people across the globe. To support affected customers, Delta has implemented a travel waiver allowing free flight changes and offered meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transportation options.
