Delta Air Lines has revised its policy, now permitting flight attendants to wear only American flag pins after two attendants faced online backlash for wearing Palestinian flag pins while on duty.
The Atlanta-based airline implemented these changes over the weekend, with the new policy taking effect on Monday, as reported by The New York Times.
The policy shift follows viral photos of two flight attendants sporting Palestinian flag pins on X last week. A viral comment labeled these pins as “Hamas badges,” a nod to the U.S.-designated terrorist group governing the Gaza Strip. Delta’s official response on social media exacerbated the situation, with the company stating, “I hear you as I’d be terrified as well, personally.”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations criticized Delta’s response, calling it “the latest example of anti-Palestinian racism.”
In the wake of backlash, Delta deleted its post and issued an apology, stating that the tweet was “not in line with our values.” The company added, “We strive for an environment of inclusivity & respect for all, in our communities & our planes. The employee responsible no longer supports Delta’s social channels. We apologize for this hurtful post.”
Previously, employees were allowed to wear non-U.S. flag pins. A spokeswoman for Delta confirmed that the photographed flight attendants were compliant with Delta’s uniform guidelines, and the company has reached out to offer them support.
This incident is one of many where the Israel-Hamas conflict has impacted U.S. businesses. Earlier this year, Google terminated over 50 employees who protested against the company’s collaboration with the Israeli military.
