The Department of Transportation is currently investigating Delta Air Lines to ensure it is adequately addressing consumer needs amid ongoing flight cancellations following a global tech outage last week.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of passenger rights, stating via social media that “All airline passengers have the right to be treated fairly, and I will make sure that right is upheld.” He noted that his department has received “hundreds of complaints” regarding Delta’s response to the recent tech disruptions.
Delta, based in Atlanta, has faced challenges in restoring its operations after a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused widespread issues for businesses globally. The technical glitch affected Microsoft’s Windows operating systems, leading to significant disruptions for corporate users, with many experiencing the “Blue Screen of Death.”
The incident impacted nearly every major industry, including healthcare, delivery services, retail, and finance, with airlines experiencing severe disruptions. On Friday alone, over 46,000 flights were delayed and 5,171 were canceled, according to FlightAware, with Delta being one of the most affected carriers.
Delta reported that it canceled approximately 3,500 flights over the weekend and continued to struggle with cancellations and delays throughout the following days, with FlightAware documenting over 2,500 cancellations and 3,441 delays on Sunday and Monday, and an additional 738 cancellations or delays on Tuesday.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed regret over the situation, stating, “Canceling a flight is always a last resort, and something we don’t take lightly. I want to apologize to everyone impacted by these events. Delta is in the business of connecting the world, and we understand how difficult it can be when your travels are disrupted.”
He explained that Delta relies on a number of Microsoft Windows applications, including crew tracking systems that were hindered by the system outage. To assist affected customers, Delta has implemented a travel waiver allowing free flight changes and is providing meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transportation options.
