The construction of the Dellepiane Highway, a crucial access route to Buenos Aires, is advancing with significant modernization plans aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing safety for commuters. The initiative seeks to transform the southern corridor of the city, introducing a central exclusive lane dedicated to public transport that will connect with the Metrobus system along the 25 de Mayo Highway. This upgrade is expected to ease peak hour congestion, providing public transport users with a safer and more efficient travel option.
The project falls under the Masterplan for the Dellepiane Highway, as outlined by the Buenos Aires Ministry of Infrastructure. This comprehensive plan aims to improve mobility for over 200,000 daily commuters using the Dellepiane Highway. Key modifications include a general redesign of the road in compliance with current regulations, extending ramps for safer highway entry and exit, widening bridges, and reconfiguring lanes for enhanced efficiency. Additionally, the project will reinstate interrupted feeder routes due to the Belgrano Sur railway and entails the construction of new pedestrian bridges along with the adaptation of existing ones.
Plans also include a 4-kilometer-long linear park, which will run along the highway and feature a biocorridor in sections. This park aims to regenerate 260,000 square meters of green space, increasing the number of trees in the area by 27%. The park will incorporate urban facilities for various uses such as sports fields, relaxation zones, children’s playgrounds, and cultural spaces.
The Dellepiane Metrobus project will establish an exclusive public transport corridor stretching 4.6 kilometers, linking Av. General Paz with the existing Metrobus 25 de Mayo. This new corridor will introduce four central bus stops, enabling passengers to board and disembark safely, away from highway traffic. Officials estimate that this will directly benefit over 15,000 individuals who rely on public transport along the highway.
Construction work began in July 2025, with ongoing progress reported as of January 2026. Current activities include the development of feeder roads, new pedestrian bridges, the culverting of the Cildáñez stream, and the dedicated Metrobus corridor. Although there have not been any recent total road closures, lane reductions are in effect and heavy machinery is present, with no confirmed opening date announced yet.
The Dellepiane Highway modernization embodies a forward-thinking approach to urban transport, aiming to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable travel options, which can ultimately lead to a cleaner, greener city.
