Delaware State is making strides towards securing its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) football title since 2007 as it prepares to host Howard University on November 15 at Alumni Stadium. The Hornets, boasting a 7-3 overall record and 3-0 in the MEAC, will play their first league game on home turf this season, after a narrow victory over Morgan State last week.
With a decisive home match against South Carolina State on November 22 looming on the horizon, which may determine the MEAC champion and the representative for the Celebration Bowl, Delaware State recognizes the crucial nature of its upcoming game against Howard.
“We can write our own destiny. We’re 3-0 in the MEAC,” said Delaware State head coach DeSean Jackson. “That doesn’t mean much because we still have two games left. If we don’t handle our business after all the hard work we’ve done, it’s gonna be a disaster.”
Tickets for the game can be purchased through dsuhornets.com or at Alumni Stadium on game day, starting at $10. For those unable to attend in person, the game will be broadcast on the Heritage Sports Radio Network and streamed on ESPN+.
Delaware State’s offense is performing impressively, averaging 449.8 total yards per game, which ranks first in the MEAC and 12th in the FCS. Meanwhile, Howard will look to turn around its fortunes, currently last in the conference for scoring offense and total offense. The Hornets are looking to make a statement as they compete against the Bison, historically leading the series 41-40 with one tie.
Running back James Jones, averaging 10.2 yards per carry, will be a key player to watch for Delaware State, while Howard’s Anthony Howard Jr. stands out with an average of 89.9 all-purpose yards per game.
Both coaches recognize the stakes of the matchup. Coach Jackson emphasizes the need for a shift in mindset, asking his players to embrace the challenge of overcoming past losses to Howard. In contrast, Howard coach Larry Scott acknowledges the Hornets’ recent strong performance, urging his team to reduce mistakes and play error-free football.
With the excitement mounting for what promises to be a pivotal game in both teams’ seasons, Delaware State is eager to solidify its quest for the MEAC championship, showcasing resilience and determination on their home field. The Hornets aim to not only defeat Howard but also build momentum as they chase a historic title and potential berth in the Celebration Bowl.
