Deion Sanders, the head coach of Colorado football, expressed strong criticism regarding the exclusion of Travis Hunter from the list of finalists for the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award, which recognizes the nation’s top defensive back. Sanders described the decision as “idiotic” and suggested it undermines the integrity of the award.
Travis Hunter, a dual-threat player for Colorado, has excelled both as a cornerback and a wide receiver and is considered a favorite contender for the Heisman Trophy. Despite his impressive performance this season, which includes 82 receptions, 1,036 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns, as well as notable defensive statistics such as three interceptions and nine pass breakups, he was not chosen among the final three candidates for the Thorpe Award. The finalists announced on Tuesday include Jahdae Barron (Texas), Caleb Downs (Ohio State), and Malaki Starks (Georgia).
In his weekly news conference in Boulder, Sanders voiced his disbelief over Hunter’s omission. He reflected on his own experience as a past recipient of the award, saying, “You can have my award… it’s just sitting up there collecting dust. So Travis can have my Thorpe Award,” emphasizing his conviction that Hunter is indeed the best defensive back in college football.
The Jim Thorpe Award is overseen by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, which conducts a rigorous selection process to narrow down candidates. In response to Sanders’ comments, Mike James, the executive director of the Hall, conveyed that the committee invests considerable effort into identifying top defensive backs and acknowledged the challenges faced each year in making such selections.
Despite the controversy surrounding the Thorpe Award, Hunter’s talents have not gone unnoticed, as he is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award for the best receiver in college football. Sanders pointed out that Hunter’s skills make it so opposing quarterbacks seldom target him, which contributes to his defensive impact that may not fully reflect in traditional statistics.
As Colorado concludes the regular season with a matchup against Oklahoma State, they still hold a slim hope for a spot in the Big 12 Championship game, contingent upon the outcomes of other teams.
The Thorpe Award winner will be revealed on December 12, while Heisman Trophy finalists will be announced on December 9.
This situation highlights the complexities and subjectivity involved in award selections in college sports. Coaches often feel a deep connection to their players and passionately advocate for their recognition. It’s hopeful to see the support that Sanders provides for Hunter, which underscores the importance of players’ contributions both on and off the field. Recognizing that awards can be fickle, the focus on the ongoing performances and the potential for future successes in Hunter’s career remains bright.
