In a recent discussion, Colorado coach Deion Sanders expressed his disapproval of the recent termination of Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, highlighting the evolving nature of college sports where financial resources play a significant role alongside coaching prowess. Gundy, who impressively led his team to 18 consecutive bowl games, faced challenges in the last two seasons. Despite reaching the Big 12 Conference championship game in December 2023, his team’s struggles this year with a 1-2 record culminated in his dismissal on September 23. Over his tenure at Oklahoma State, Gundy amassed a record of 170-90.
During the Colorado Football Coaches Show, Sanders openly questioned the decision, emphasizing Gundy’s long-standing contributions and describing him as the “Grand Poobah” due to his seniority and success. Gundy was noteworthy for being the second-longest tenured head coach in major college football, with 21 seasons spent in Stillwater. Sanders acknowledged the changing dynamics of college sports, where financial backing is now essential for continued success, not just coaching skills.
Sanders shared his admiration for Gundy, stating that he considers him a hero and respects his accomplishments. Additionally, Sanders humorously mentioned Gundy’s trademark mullet, noting that a rumor suggested other coaches might adopt the hairstyle in solidarity. In the spirit of camaraderie, Sanders added that he wished such a rumor were true, even though he humorously commented on his own lack of hair.
Following his departure, Gundy is set to receive a $15 million buyout from Oklahoma State. Sanders expressed his desire to learn from Gundy, calling him a “winner.”
As for Sanders’ team, they currently hold a 2-2 record this year and are preparing to face BYU on Saturday night at home. Last season, Colorado triumphed over Oklahoma State in Boulder with a decisive 52-0 victory.
