A significant brush fire in Deer Creek, Arizona, has led to the closure of State Route 87, a crucial highway linking the Valley to eastern Arizona. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced that the highway is closed in both directions near SR-188, approximately 15 miles south of Payson.

The fire, known as the Oak Fire, has expanded to three to five acres in size and is actively burning in the median and on the east side of SR 87 near milepost 234. Fire crews are currently working to contain the blaze. Specifically, the northbound lanes of SR 87 are closed at Bush Highway (milepost 199), while the southbound lanes are shut down at the junction with SR 188.

As of now, there is no estimated timeline for when the highway will reopen. Drivers traveling in the area are advised to expect delays and to seek alternate routes to avoid the affected section.
