Classes and activities have been canceled across Tuscaloosa County and City schools due to anticipated frigid temperatures and the potential for icy conditions. This decision comes in response to a cold weather advisory warning of overnight lows plunging into the teens.

In addition to local schools, both the University of Alabama and Shelton State Community College have also canceled all scheduled activities for January 26. The Tuscaloosa County School System emphasized safety as its primary concern, with the Superintendent noting that the forecast indicates temperatures will likely remain below freezing, raising concerns about the risk of ice on roads, especially on less traveled paths.

To adapt to the weather, the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority has postponed the opening of its activity centers until noon and will close early at 6 p.m. City offices in Tuscaloosa are also adjusting their hours, with City Hall opening at 10 a.m. on Monday. Garbage, trash, and recycling collections will also start later at 10 a.m., and municipal court dates are canceled for the day, requiring those affected to contact the court for rescheduling.

The National Weather Service reports that temperatures will be exceptionally cold, with lows predicted to dip to around 14 degrees. There is some hope, however, as January 26 is expected to bring partly sunny skies with a high of 35 degrees.

This proactive response from educational institutions and local government underscores the commitment to ensuring community safety during severe weather conditions.
