Pacific Games gold medallist Deborah Bulai is on a mission to support fellow athletes in Fiji by raising funds to purchase essential sporting equipment. Recently returned to the United States after her victory in the hammer throw at the 2023 Pacific Games held in the Solomon Islands, Bulai has been actively coaching emerging talent in her sport.
Bulai recognizes that many aspiring athletes face significant barriers, particularly due to limited resources and funding. “Track and field is considered a poor sport, and many national-level athletes are required to self-fund,” she explained. This financial strain often forces talented athletes to abandon their dreams, as adulthood brings responsibilities like full-time jobs and bills, leaving little room for consistent training.
To combat this issue, Bulai has launched a GoFundMe page specifically aimed at raising funds for hammer throwers in Fiji. She firmly believes that with adequate support and modern equipment, Fiji’s athletes have the potential to compete on the global stage.
Bulai’s efforts highlight the pressing need for investment in sports to nurture and sustain talent within the country. With the right resources, Fiji can elevate its athletic capabilities and make a mark in international competitions.
