Debbie Harry Teases Florence Pugh for Blondie Biopic

Two films focusing on the iconic rock band Blondie, which rose to fame in the 1970s and early 1980s, are currently in production. One will be a documentary, while the other is a biopic. Debbie Harry, the band’s legendary frontwoman, has expressed her desire to see Florence Pugh take on a leading role in the biopic.

In an interview with The Times, Harry shared her thoughts on Pugh, stating, “If it were somebody like Florence Pugh, I would be in heaven. I just think she’s a great actor, and she could do anything.” This marks a significant moment for both Harry and Pugh, as Harry has long been a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.

Alongside her successful music career, which boasts over 40 million record sales including hits like “Call Me” and “The Tide Is High,” Harry dabbled in acting during the 1980s. She appeared as a radio presenter in David Cronenberg’s 1983 cult classic “Videodrome” and participated in Martin Scorsese’s 1989 film “New York Stories.”

However, a pivotal moment in her acting career came when filmmaker Ridley Scott offered her the role of Pris in the 1982 science fiction classic “Blade Runner.” Harry turned down the part at the insistence of her record label, which preferred she focus on music. She has since called this decision her “biggest regret,” admitting that taking on that role could have led to a more significant acting career.

Now at 80 years old, Harry continues to perform and shows no signs of retiring. Reflecting on her experiences, she remarked, “Sometimes when I walk out on stage and there’s such a terrific response, I feel like I’d better stop while I’m ahead. But no, it’s still joyful.” Harry’s ongoing passion for her craft exemplifies her commitment to both music and the performing arts, and fans eagerly anticipate both film projects that will celebrate the enduring legacy of Blondie.
