Deandre Ayton is set to become a free agent after finalizing a contract buyout with the Portland Trail Blazers, according to reports from ESPN. The 27-year-old center had $35.6 million remaining on his contract, which was originally set to expire next summer. Ayton expressed his desire to play in a winning situation, prompting discussions for the buyout with the Blazers.
With this move, Ayton is now eligible to sign with any team, including those with salary cap limitations, despite his salary exceeding $14.1 million. Traditionally, a player in his financial situation would face restrictions, but these do not apply outside of the regular season.
The buyout comes as the Trail Blazers aim to streamline their roster, particularly in the center position, which has seen an influx of talent. They currently have several young prospects, including Yang Hansen and Donovan Clingan, both of whom were recent draft picks. Additionally, Robert Williams III and Duop Reath are under contract, contributing to a crowded frontcourt.
Ayton’s career highlights include being the first player since Dwight Howard to average at least 10 points and 10 rebounds over his first seven seasons. He was instrumental in the Phoenix Suns’ journey to the NBA Finals in 2021 and has consistently performed with impressive statistics, averaging 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds while shooting an efficient 56.6% last season.
Ayton’s time with the Blazers was limited, having played only 40 games in the recent season, marking the second fewest in his career. Over the last two seasons, he played in just 95 of 164 possible games, raising concerns about his availability and consistency.
As Ayton explores his options in free agency, the hope is that he finds a new team that aligns with his aspirations for success, allowing him to maximize his potential in the upcoming season.
