Intense footage has emerged showing the final moments of 24-year-old Kristofer Lazaro Laboy, who was shot and killed by a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on June 17. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office released the video as part of an effort to maintain transparency after the incident, which happened when deputies attempted to stop Laboy’s yellow Corvette due to illegal window tints.
According to reports, Laboy fled the scene, leading police on a high-speed chase that included dangerous maneuvers, such as driving against oncoming traffic. The pursuit eventually ended when deputies boxed Laboy’s vehicle in at an apartment complex. Footage from the police helicopter reveals that Laboy exited the Corvette and allegedly approached deputies while armed.
Prior similar incidents involved community reactions emphasizing the need for accountability and clearer communication from law enforcement during traffic stops. For instance, during a previous investigation in Miami-Dade, concerns arose regarding officers identifying themselves during such encounters, leading to heightened anxiety for individuals like Laboy, who reportedly feared for his safety during the chase.
As Laboy was confronted, the deputy involved, identified as Deputy Kelvin Cox, discharged his firearm multiple times. Despite attempts to revive him, Laboy was pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded Sig Sauer handgun was found next to him, alongside a bag of marijuana and bottles of prescription medications in the Corvette.
Despite the evidence, Laboy’s family maintains that he was not a criminal, citing his good character and college education. They have called for further investigation and questioned the transparency of the video release, as their attorney argued that the footage appeared heavily edited to portray Laboy negatively. They demand the release of all relevant body camera footage, claiming that the circumstances of the stop could have led any individual to feel threatened.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz expressed a commitment to transparency and accountability during these incidents, recognizing the concerns of the community and promoting a dialogue surrounding law enforcement practices.
This tragic event highlights the ongoing concerns about police-community relationships and the circumstances surrounding traffic stops. The family’s call for answers resonates with many communities seeking justice and accountability in similar situations.
The ongoing investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will determine the sequence of events and potential accountability for those involved. The situation serves as a reminder of the necessity for transparency and communication in law enforcement actions to restore community trust and ensure safety for all citizens.
