The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that nine individuals have died due to a listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meat products.

As of now, there have been 57 confirmed cases of infection, with all affected individuals requiring hospitalization. The outbreak has spread across 18 states, including Arizona, New Mexico, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts.

The CDC noted that recent illnesses might not be fully accounted for yet, as it typically takes three to four weeks to confirm infections associated with an outbreak. It also highlighted that the actual number of individuals affected is likely higher than reported.

The recall of Boar’s Head products initially started in July and was associated with a ready-to-eat liverwurst item. The recall has since widened, now encompassing multiple products such as various sliced hams, sausages, and loaves, all produced at the same facility in Virginia as the liverwurst. However, sliced turkey and chicken products, cheeses, charcuterie items, dips, pickles, and condiments are not part of the recall. Consumers can find a complete list of affected products.

Those who have purchased these products are advised to dispose of them or check with the retailer for return options. It is also recommended to thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated meat, including refrigerators and storage containers.

Symptoms of listeria infection include fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, convulsions, and confusion, which can be particularly severe for pregnant individuals, seniors over 65, or those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms may appear one to four weeks after exposure, but can also take as long as 70 days. Anyone experiencing symptoms is urged to consult a healthcare professional.
