In an announcement from Washington, DC, District Government offices will close early at 2 PM on Tuesday, December 24, in observance of the Christmas holiday on December 25. While many services will be affected, essential operations will continue, ensuring that key support remains available for residents in need.
Several services will remain operational during the holiday period. All low-barrier shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness will be open 24 hours on both December 24 and 25, providing crucial support to vulnerable populations. These include shelters specifically catering to men, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as overflow hypothermia shelters.
The Downtown Day Services Center and the Zoe’s Doors Youth Drop-In Center will also be open on both days, offering safe spaces and walk-in services to those experiencing homelessness. Meanwhile, the DC Department of Behavioral Health will provide 24/7 support through various crisis services, ensuring that residents facing mental health challenges have access to immediate help.
However, some adjustments will occur regarding public services. The DC Department of Public Works will not collect trash, recycling, or food waste on December 25, and all related services will shift later into the week. Additionally, the Benning Road Transfer Station is currently closed for renovations.
On the day of the holiday, many public facilities will remain closed, including public schools, libraries, and community centers, though online access to resources will be available.
This proactive approach demonstrates the District’s commitment to supporting its residents, especially the most vulnerable, during the holiday season. The continuity of essential services amid holiday closures highlights the community’s resilience. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the available services and to reach out for help if needed.
As the Christmas season approaches, the efforts made by the District to care for those in need are commendable and reflect a hopeful spirit of community support and generosity.
