Fans of the Washington Commanders are eagerly anticipating the team’s return to Washington, D.C. with the unveiling of their future home, set to open in 2030. The architectural firm HKS has shared five concept renderings that showcase the vision for the new stadium, which will be built on the historic site of RFK Stadium along East Capitol Street in Northeast D.C. The old stadium’s demolition is nearly finished, paving the way for this new chapter.
Mark Clouse, President of the Washington Commanders, expressed pride in unveiling these initial visuals, highlighting this moment as a significant milestone in the development process. He acknowledged the collaboration with HKS, emphasizing how their innovative approach has shaped a design that honors the site’s unique historical significance along D.C.’s Monumental Axis.
HKS, renowned for creating iconic sports venues such as SoFi Stadium in California and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, is dedicated to making this project reflective of the local heritage. “This project calls for an equally extraordinary response,” said Mark A. Williams, FAIA, HKS Global Venues Director, reinforcing the intent to celebrate the rich legacy of RFK Stadium while introducing modern elements.
The new stadium aims to accommodate approximately 65,000 spectators and is projected to host more than 200 events annually, covering a diverse range of activities from sports events to concerts and major celebrations.
Mayor Muriel Bowser noted the positive implications of the project, stating it represents a beautiful waterfront stadium, the return of the Commanders, and opportunities for residents and local businesses. Despite her announcement in November not to seek reelection, Bowser is committed to ensuring the project’s continuity, expressing confidence in the team’s progress and planning efforts.
As construction is set to begin in the spring of 2027, the stadium is anticipated to be completed by 2030. The overall development will also include residential and commercial spaces, although this phase is expected to commence a decade later.
This ambitious project not only brings back a beloved local team but also promises to create jobs and boost the economy, positioning D.C. as a vibrant hub for sports and entertainment in the years to come.
