Daytona 500 Moves Date, Ditches Presidents Day Weekend as NFL Schedule Reshuffles

The 2027 Daytona 500 is set to depart from its longstanding tradition of being held on Presidents Day weekend due to scheduling conflicts arising from the NFL’s expansion to a 17-game regular season implemented in 2021. This shift means the iconic NASCAR event, often referred to as NASCAR’s “Super Bowl,” will take place on Sunday, February 21, 2027. This new date follows the Super Bowl LXI, which is scheduled for February 14 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Frank Kelleher, president of Daytona International Speedway, explained that the crowded sports landscape in February, particularly with the Super Bowl falling just days prior, prompted this important decision, allowing the Daytona 500 to stand out on its own.

The Daytona 500 in 2026 will still follow its traditional Presidents Day weekend date, scheduled for February 15. Kelleher emphasized the importance of informing fans well in advance, as many loyal attendees plan their travel over a year ahead for this major event.

The need for change became prominent after the NFL commenced its extended schedule, leading to a shift in Super Bowl timings that now encroach upon the Daytona 500’s historic dates. The Daytona 500 has seen varied scheduling since its inception in 1959, sometimes falling as early as February 14 and as late as February 28.

Despite the changes, NASCAR fans can hope for a special race day experience as the organization continues to prioritize accountability to its fans while navigating these scheduling challenges. With the 2027 Daytona 500 now positioned away from the Super Bowl, race enthusiasts can look forward to a dedicated celebration of motorsport.
