Data Gaps: Texas AI/AN Communities Demand Change

Texas faces a pressing need to improve the data disaggregation practices for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. Accurate data collection is essential as it influences the allocation of funding and resources from governmental programs. Currently, AI/AN individuals are often underrepresented in federal and state surveys, leading to substantial consequences. For instance, the Department of Housing and Urban Development relies on census data to distribute approximately $650 million each year to over 580 tribes through the Indian Housing Block Grant program. When these communities are not accurately counted, they miss out on crucial financial support.

To address these gaps, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Policy Research Center, in partnership with various civil rights organizations, has proposed a series of policy recommendations aimed at enhancing data accuracy and inclusivity.

Despite these challenges, AI/AN communities in Texas showcase a rich and enduring cultural heritage that has thrived for centuries. Through their art, traditions, and advocacy efforts, they significantly enrich the cultural landscape of the state, showcasing their resilience and strong community ties. Efforts are being made by these communities to innovate and preserve their identity, standing as a symbol of empowerment and pride.

It is vital to recognize that current data collection methodologies often fall short of reflecting the diverse identities of Texas’s population. Many survey instruments primarily focus on binary, cisgender categories, overlooking the experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. Additionally, racial and ethnic categories used in these collections do not adequately represent Texas’s multiracial and multiethnic population. To truly capture the rich demographics of Texas, a more inclusive approach to data collection is necessary.

In summary, advancing data disaggregation practices will not only ensure AI/AN communities receive the funding they rightfully deserve but will also foster a more inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of all Texans. Through improved data collection and recognition of cultural contributions, there is hope for a more equitable future. The collective efforts of advocacy groups and the resilience of AI/AN communities can lead to meaningful changes that benefit everyone in Texas.
