Danielle Brooks’ Surprising Journey to Motherhood: A Personal Revelation

Oscar-nominated actress Danielle Brooks has opened up about her unexpected journey to motherhood during the latest episode of the Pregnant Pause podcast. Before giving birth to her daughter Freeya in 2019, Brooks shared that she had no intention of becoming a mother, stating, “I did not want children… I was okay with that,” until meeting her husband, Dennis Gelin. Their strong alignment on parenting philosophies transformed her perspective.

Brooks recalled a pivotal moment while performing in the Broadway adaptation of The Color Purple, when she discovered she was pregnant while undergoing Accutane treatment for severe acne. This medication poses serious risks during pregnancy, and Brooks had been advised against becoming pregnant while on it. “You actually have to sign something saying that you will have an abortion if you get pregnant,” she explained. Despite the initial fear, the revelation of her pregnancy brought forth an unexpected desire to become a mom.

After a difficult decision to terminate that first pregnancy, Brooks later welcomed her daughter Freeya on November 16, 2019. She expressed immense joy upon Freeya’s arrival, reflecting on the supportive role her husband played throughout her journey.

In her conversation with podcast host Danielle Cadet, Brooks emphasized the importance of taking a step back during motherhood and encouraged fellow moms to rest. “I think it’s okay to be in that handicap for a little bit… We deserve it,” she said.

This heartfelt discussion not only sheds light on Brooks’ personal challenges but serves as a reminder of the support many women need during such transformative times. Congratulations to Danielle Brooks on her beautiful journey into motherhood!
