As the New York Giants grapple with another disappointing season, former quarterback Daniel Jones has found new life with the Indianapolis Colts, where he has not only played a crucial role in leading the team to the best record in the NFL but has also entered the MVP conversation after the first eight games of the season.
Darius Slayton, Jones’ former teammate and wide receiver with the Giants, expressed his unwavering belief in Jones’ talent and work ethic. Following a practice session ahead of the Giants’ upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers at MetLife Stadium, Slayton stated, “I can’t say I’m surprised. I’ve always believed in Daniel. He put in the work and he’s talented, and it’s showing.”
Reflecting on Jones’ dedication, Slayton remarked that success often follows those who approach their work with the right mindset and effort. He emphasized the importance of timing in life, suggesting that perhaps Jones’ transformation into a star player was meant to happen outside of New York, possibly reflecting on how the Colts’ environment might suit him better than his previous one with the Giants.
Jones’ resurgence has come on the heels of his tumultuous tenure with New York, where he was released in November and spent part of last season on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad. He eventually signed a one-year deal with the Colts, where he competed for the starting quarterback position and ultimately thrived.
In contrast, Slayton’s performance has declined since Jones’ departure; after signing a three-year, $36 million contract earlier this year, he has managed just 14 receptions for 192 yards and faced challenges with injuries and adapting to different quarterbacks.
Despite facing his own struggles, Slayton has remained supportive of Jones, expressing pride in his former teammate’s accomplishments. “I’m happy for him, proud of him, and glad he got his chance to show who he is and what kind of caliber player he is,” Slayton said. “You’re happy to see that person come out on the other side… With the way he fights, I knew he’d be successful eventually.”
Jones’ progress can be seen as a testament to his perseverance and skill, demonstrating that hard work and the right opportunity can lead to a turnaround — a hopeful reminder for both fans and players navigating similar challenges. As the Colts continue to shine this season, Jones’ trajectory serves as an inspiration for resilience in the face of adversity.
