Daniel Day-Lewis is stepping back into the acting world after a seven-year hiatus to support his son, Ronan, who is making his directorial debut with the film “Anemone.” The acclaimed actor, known for winning the Best Actor Oscar three times, co-wrote the film with his son. “Anemone” aims to delve into the complexities of familial relationships, particularly between fathers, sons, and brothers.
Last Sunday, the 67-year-old Day-Lewis was seen on set in Manchester, England, riding a motorcycle alongside co-star Sean Bean. Shortly after, Focus Features and Plan B Entertainment announced they would co-produce the film. Peter Kujawski, chair of Focus Features, expressed excitement about collaborating with Ronan Day-Lewis and his father, stating they have crafted an outstanding script that they look forward to bringing to audiences.
Ronan Day-Lewis, 26, is also a painter, noted for his recent international solo exhibition, “That Summer We All Saw Them,” which opened in Hong Kong.
Daniel Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting in 2017, just before receiving another Oscar nomination for “Phantom Thread.” At that time, his representative mentioned it was a private decision without further commentary from Day-Lewis himself. In a later interview with W Magazine, the actor reflected on the lack of a specific reason for his choice to retire and expressed his mixed emotions about stepping away from acting.
During a recent awards ceremony, Day-Lewis was reunited with director Martin Scorsese, who hinted at the possibility of the actor returning to film.
Details regarding the release date of “Anemone” have yet to be announced, though the film has already secured key production team members, including director of photography Ben Fordesman, costume designer Jane Petrie, and production designer Chris Oddy. It remains uncertain if Day-Lewis will pursue additional acting roles in the future.
