Actor Daniel Day-Lewis is set to come out of retirement to support his son, Ronan, who is directing his first film, titled “Anemone.”
After a seven-year break from Hollywood, Day-Lewis, who has won the Best Actor Oscar three times, is returning for this family project. The film, co-written by both father and son, is described as an examination of complex relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers, exploring the dynamics of familial connections.
On the set in Manchester, England, Day-Lewis, 67, was spotted riding a motorcycle alongside co-star Sean Bean, known for his role in “The Lord of the Rings.” Shortly after, Focus Features and Plan B Entertainment announced they would jointly produce the film.
Peter Kujawski, chair of Focus Features, expressed excitement about partnering with Ronan Day-Lewis, emphasizing the exceptional quality of the script they have developed together.
Ronan, 26, is a painter who recently showcased his artwork in New York and held his first international solo exhibition in Hong Kong.
Daniel Day-Lewis had previously announced his retirement from acting in 2017, just before receiving another Best Actor nomination for “Phantom Thread.” At that time, his representative indicated it was a private decision and that he would not be discussing it further.
Reflecting on his choice to leave acting, Day-Lewis mentioned a deep sense of sadness and uncertainty about his decision, which he described as a compulsion that emerged from years of contemplation about his career.
The actor also reconnected with director Martin Scorsese at the National Board of Review Awards, where Scorsese hinted at the possibility of Day-Lewis returning to acting, noting the wonderful experiences they shared while working together.
While Focus Features has not announced a release date for “Anemone,” they have revealed key team members, including cinematographer Ben Fordesman, costume designer Jane Petrie, and production designer Chris Oddy.
It remains unclear whether Day-Lewis intends to take on any additional acting roles in the future, and representatives for the actor were not available for immediate comment.
