Actor Daniel Day-Lewis is reversing his retirement to support his son, Ronan, who is making his directorial debut.
After a seven-year break from acting, the acclaimed actor, who has won the Academy Award for Best Actor three times, will star in the film “Anemone,” which he co-wrote with his son. The movie is described as a dive into the complex dynamics of relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers, as well as the nuances of family ties.
On Sunday, the 67-year-old Day-Lewis was spotted riding a motorcycle on the film’s set in Manchester, England, alongside co-star Sean Bean. Just two days later, Focus Features and Plan B Entertainment announced their collaboration on the project.
Peter Kujawski, chair of Focus Features, expressed enthusiasm for working with Ronan Day-Lewis, calling him a “brilliant visual artist.” He noted that the script they created is exceptional and looks forward to sharing their vision with audiences.
Ronan Day-Lewis, 26, is a painter who recently held his first international solo exhibition, “That Summer We All Saw Them,” in Hong Kong.
When Daniel Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting in 2017, it came shortly before his nomination for the film “Phantom Thread.” At that time, his representative stated that he would no longer act and thanked his collaborators and audiences for their support over the years, indicating that it was a personal decision.
The actor later reflected in an interview that there was no specific reason for his retirement, admitting he had wrestled with his feelings about acting throughout his life.
During a recent awards ceremony, Day-Lewis reconnected with director Martin Scorsese, who hinted that another acting project could be on the horizon.
While Focus Features has yet to announce a release date for “Anemone,” they have confirmed the film’s creative team, including director of photography Ben Fordesman and costume designer Jane Petrie. It remains uncertain if Day-Lewis will consider additional acting opportunities in the future.
