Daniel Berger is enjoying a triumphant return to his home turf, showcasing his skills in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club & Lodge. After a commendable tie for 32nd at the Cognizant Classic last week, Berger demonstrated impressive form, shooting a nine-under 63 on Thursday, which positioned him three shots ahead after the first round.
For Berger, who resides just two hours away in Jupiter, Florida, playing in his home state brings both comfort and familiarity. “I get to drive my own car up here, slept in my own bed last week,” he said, reflecting on the advantages of competing close to home. This season marks a shift for Berger; previously, he often skipped the Florida events in favor of the West Coast swing, but the elevated nature of this year’s events made staying home a much more appealing option.
Another factor contributing to his success is his return to health. His right ring finger injury—sustained at the BMW Championship in August—was a significant setback. Initially hoping for a swift recovery, he ended up in a splint for two months and missed nearly three months of play before returning at the RSM Classic, where he tied for 51st. “Just one of those things, like the finger that I broke and where I broke it actually ended up being more of a pain in the butt than I thought it was going to be,” he reflected on the long rehabilitation process.
Prior to his injury, Berger had been experiencing a solid season, making 18 out of 22 cuts and posting high finishes, including a T2 at the WM Phoenix Open and T3 at the RBC Heritage last year. Starting 2026 on a positive note with a T6 finish in Hawaii, he has missed only one cut this season so far.
On Thursday, Berger’s round was flawless, as he did not record a single bogey and impressively scored six under on the back nine. His remarkable 63 was just one stroke shy of the tournament record, previously held by four players. Leading in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and excelling in putting, Berger is proving that good things come to those who remain resilient in pursuit of their goals. As he continues to build momentum, the rest of the tournament could be very promising for this talented Florida golfer.
