Dancing With the Stars has stirred up controversy with the inclusion of Anna Delvey, a convicted fraudster, as a contestant in its 33rd season. Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, made headlines when she claimed to have received permission from ICE to participate in the competition. Ahead of the September 17 premiere, she expressed confidence in an interview, stating, “What’s the worst that can happen? They’re not gonna arrest me for dancing badly.” Delvey also humorously noted that she hoped “the government” would be cheering for her.
The decision to feature Delvey has sparked extensive debate, with many questioning whether she should be allowed on the show. However, DWTS showrunner Conrad Green defended the choice, stating that the show has previously included participants with criminal backgrounds. He emphasized that Delvey has served her time and that there is significant public interest in her performance.
On the opening night of the competition, Delvey showcased her skills by performing a cha-cha to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” sporting a sparkling ankle monitor alongside her dance partner, Ezra Sosa. In her introduction, Delvey acknowledged her past but expressed a desire to demonstrate a different aspect of herself. “I’ve reinvented myself many times, and this time I’m going to be a ballroom dancer,” she said.
Following her performance, judge Carrie Ann Inaba noted a palpable shift in energy as Delvey took the floor, encouraging the audience to focus on her dancing. Ultimately, Delvey and Sosa scored 18 out of 30 points—an average score that suggests potential for improvement. Delvey expressed her relief at not having to repeat the dance. Despite some criticism, she is set to continue in the competition, with no eliminations occurring on opening night.
