COLUMBIA, Mo.

Mizzou football is facing a significant loss on its defensive line as standout defensive end Damon Wilson has announced he will enter the transfer portal after just one season with the team. The Florida native confirmed his decision via Instagram on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment in his collegiate career.

During his first year with the Tigers, Wilson demonstrated remarkable athleticism and skill after transferring from Georgia, finishing the 2025 season with 23 total tackles—14 solo—as well as an impressive 9.5 tackles for loss. He led the team with 9.0 sacks, forced one fumble, recorded 13 quarterback hurries, adroitly broke up two passes, and secured one interception against Vanderbilt. His performance was recognized by Pro Football Focus, ranking him as the No. 8 edge rusher nationally in terms of pass rush productivity.

Wilson’s departure adds to the challenges faced by Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz, who now sees 22 players from his roster decide to enter the transfer portal. With Wilson’s departure, the Tigers must recalibrate their defensive strategies heading into the 2026 campaign, despite returning other defensive ends like Darris Smith, Langden Kitchen, and Daeden Hopkins.

Interestingly, Wilson’s decision to transfer comes amid ongoing legal issues with his former school. The University of Georgia has initiated a lawsuit against him for $390,000, claiming he breached his contract with their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) collective. In response, Wilson filed a countersuit asserting that the contract he signed was not legally binding and accusing Georgia of harassment following his announcement to transfer.

This situation underscores the complexities student-athletes face within the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly with NIL agreements. As Wilson navigates these challenges, there remains an opportunity for him to join a program that may better suit his career aspirations and legal circumstances.
