Residents in Damascus reported a night filled with anxiety as they awaited crucial news about their capital. The atmosphere was electric as reports emerged that rebel forces were advancing, eventually declaring Damascus “free” from longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad early on Sunday morning. Unverified footage circulating on social media depicted jubilant citizens celebrating in the streets, welcoming the rebel fighters, and witnessing the release of inmates from the notorious Saydnaya prison.
Rania Kataf, a Damascus resident and founder of the Humans of Damascus Facebook page, expressed her profound emotions saying, “No one slept in Syria last night… no Syrian abroad slept.” She reflected on the collective sense of anticipation in the community as they awaited confirmation of the news. “It feels like we’ve been underwater for thirteen years, and we just took a breath,” she shared, acknowledging the toll the regime has taken on Syrians over the years. While Kataf admitted to having mixed emotions about the recent developments, she also felt a newfound sense of security in expressing her opinions without fear.
Another anonymous resident described the unprecedented feeling of freedom now felt in the city, recounting the vibrant celebrations in Umayyad Square—home to key government sites. “In Umayyad Square, people are celebrating in such a peaceful manner. They’re shooting fireworks,” he recounted, noting the contrast between traditional gunfire and festive celebrations. This resident emphasized that the joyful atmosphere evokes memories from the initial revolution that began in 2011, viewing the current moment as a continuation of that dream. Although uncertainty about the future persists, the overwhelming sentiment in the streets was one of celebration.
Yazan Al Amari, traveling from Deraa to Damascus, expressed excitement in joining the festivities as the city embraced this new chapter.
This momentous event in Syria marks a significant shift in the lives of its citizens. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, the spirit of hope and freedom is palpable, signaling a potential new beginning for the nation after years of turmoil. The resilience of the Syrian people and their yearning for a better future are inspiring and may pave the way for a more peaceful and democratic Syria.
