ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Damar Hamlin celebrated a milestone moment in his football career as he secured his first interception during a Monday night game against Jacksonville, nearly two years after experiencing a life-threatening cardiac arrest on the field in Cincinnati.
Hamlin’s interception came in the second quarter when he capitalized on a misthrown pass from Trevor Lawrence intended for Brian Thomas Jr., making the catch at Buffalo’s 41-yard line and returning it for 19 yards. The significance of the moment was profound for Hamlin, who said, “We all know my last game and how that game went. So to be able to come all the way back from that, and have a special moment, it’s all God.”
As his teammates surrounded him in celebration, Hamlin clung tightly to the football, reflecting on the support he received throughout his recovery. “They were a big part of me being able to make this type of comeback. They pushed me. They gave me love. They gave me grace. They gave me everything I needed on the journey,” he stated, acknowledging his teammates’ excitement for his achievement.
Hamlin’s path back to the game began in April 2023, when he was cleared to practice after doctors indicated the risk of a recurrence was low. He gradually worked his way through training and preseason games, eventually securing a backup position on the Bills roster and earning a starting role in the secondary.
Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott praised Hamlin’s journey and perseverance, highlighting the significance of the night. Hamlin’s interception helped set the stage for a 27-yard touchdown pass from Josh Allen to Khalil Shakir, extending Buffalo’s lead to 27-3 before halftime.
“I’m still processing that as I go, but I was able to take it one day at a time,” Hamlin said, reflecting on his journey from a sixth-round draft pick to an impactful player on the field.
