The Nashville Predators are set to trade winger Michael Bunting to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a third-round pick, as confirmed by a league source. Bunting, who is 30 years old and in the final year of a $4.5 million cap hit contract, has been a consistent 20-goal scorer and currently holds 13 goals and 31 points over 61 games this season. The pick heading to Nashville is originally from the Seattle franchise.

In a bid to bolster their roster, the Stars recognized a need for additional scoring, particularly at left wing where their lineup has been somewhat lacking behind Jason Robertson. As of Thursday, players Sam Steel, Adam Erne, and Colin Blackwell combined for only 17 goals. Bunting’s acquisition is expected to help fill this gap, especially following Tyler Seguin’s ACL injury, which has placed him on season-ending injured reserve and opened up $6 million in cap space. This flexibility has allowed Dallas to also add right-shot defenseman Tyler Myers along with Bunting.

On the flip side, Nashville is actively moving players as part of a sell-off strategy. The Predators recently dealt center Michael McCarron to the Minnesota Wild for a second-round pick, and also transferred winger Cole Smith to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for another third-round pick and AHL defenseman Christoffer Sedoff. With the team sitting five points outside a playoff position in the Western Conference, additional trades could be forthcoming. Notably, four players remain on The Athletic’s trade board, including renowned figures like Steven Stamkos and Ryan O’Reilly.

Bunting’s journey in the league has been notable; after two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he amassed 46 goals, he was traded by the Carolina Hurricanes to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who then sent him to Nashville. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated his scoring prowess and ability to contribute effectively as a middle-six forward. This season, his play has not only driven the offense for the Predators but also showcased his knack for drawing penalties, underlining his valuable presence on the ice.

As the trade deadline approaches, the moves by both Dallas and Nashville signal their respective strategies—one looking to enhance its chances for a Stanley Cup run while the other prepares for a rebuild. This swap could prove beneficial for both teams as they navigate the rest of the season, showcasing the dynamic nature of NHL trades.
