Dallas Mavericks: Is Nico Harrison About to Be Fired?

Dallas Mavericks fans have been vocally expressing their dissatisfaction with general manager Nico Harrison, chanting “Fire Nico!” for several months. Reports from NBA insider Marc Stein suggest that Harrison’s dismissal is on the horizon, with an announcement potentially coming as early as today. This decision would mark the end of Harrison’s tenure, which has lasted over four seasons and included one of the most unexpected trades in NBA history—sending star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers at last season’s trade deadline.

Harrison took full responsibility for the controversial trade, citing concerns over Doncic’s conditioning and weight issues. This explanation was met with skepticism, especially after longtime owner Mark Cuban revealed that he was unaware the trade was occurring until it was finalized. In a press conference following the trade, Harrison mentioned that he might not remain in his position much longer if the deal did not benefit the team, clearly aware of the high stakes involved.

The Mavs’ performance plummeted following the trade, culminating in a disappointing 39-43 record and an early exit in the play-in tournament. Compounding the team’s struggles, the new line-up faced several injuries, including Anthony Davis, who was sidelined for six weeks after an injury during his debut with the Mavericks. Additionally, star point guard Kyrie Irving endured a season-ending torn ACL in early March, leaving Davis without a key teammate when he returned to action.

Despite a stroke of luck when Dallas won the NBA draft lottery and selected promising forward Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick, the team is currently grappling with a tough start to the 2025-26 season, holding a dismal 3-8 record. Flagg’s rookie challenges and an early calf injury to Davis—who joins Irving on the sidelines—only add to the Mavericks’ woes.

While fans hope for positive changes with a potential leadership overhaul, the team’s future remains uncertain. The imminent firing of Harrison could pave the way for a fresh perspective and hopefully mark the beginning of a turnaround for what has become a struggling franchise.
