Amidst the cold rain, a group of students gathered in profound sorrow at Willis C. Winters Park to pay tribute to their beloved teammate, 18-year-old Wornan Padilla Garcia, who was tragically shot the day before near Woodrow Wilson High School. The scene was somber as students circled the spot where Garcia had fallen, some bowing their heads in grief, others offering comfort to one another.
Described as “a beautiful soul” by sophomore Gustavo Galvan, Garcia was cherished by his peers for his positivity and kindness. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, though witnesses indicated that a friend had accidentally discharged a firearm while showing Garcia the weapon. Dallas police have apprehended a 16-year-old suspect, who is now facing murder charges. Due to the suspect’s age, authorities have withheld their name.
By midmorning, a memorial had begun to form in the parking lot with prayer candles, bouquets of flowers, and silver balloons emblazoned with #21, representing Garcia’s soccer jersey number. As a key player on both the junior varsity and varsity soccer teams, Garcia was recognized for his great sportsmanship and team spirit. Coach Denzel Coipel noted his positive attitude, and fellow students shared how Garcia had a unique ability to uplift those around him.
Having moved from Mexico two years ago, Garcia had aspirations for college and had quickly become a beloved figure in the school community. Freshman soccer coach Edwin Villatoro remarked on Garcia’s supportive nature and how he had overcome the initial language barrier to encourage his teammates in English.
Among those mourning was Jackson Hill, a fellow soccer player who reflected on their friendship and expressed a desire to have communicated more with Garcia. The outpouring of love continued as students supported one another through this deeply tragic event.
In response to the immense loss, the Dallas Independent School District provided counselors at the school to help the community navigate their grief. Teachers were also given guidance on how to support their students during this challenging time.
As students began to return to classes, lingering sorrow transformed into a moment of solidarity when two boys lifted the fallen balloons back into the air, symbolizing both remembrance and hope for their cherished friend.
