As the NFL trade deadline approaches, the Dallas Cowboys are proving to be a team to watch closely. Team owner Jerry Jones has expressed the organization’s intention to bolster their defensive lineup, indicating that they are actively exploring trade opportunities.
Recently, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that the Cowboys reached out to both the Las Vegas Raiders regarding star defensive end Maxx Crosby and the Cincinnati Bengals concerning Trey Hendrickson, but were turned down by both teams. Glazer’s insights highlight that the Cowboys are keen on enhancing their defense and are not shying away from making bold moves.
The urgency for these defensive upgrades stems from the Cowboys’ performance this season. Heading into Week 8, they are currently allowing an alarming 401.6 total yards per game, the highest in the NFL. Additionally, they are surrendering the most passing yards (260.3) and ranking among the worst in points allowed (29.4) and rushing yards (141.3) per game. The situation has worsened since the team traded away Micah Parsons, a significant defensive asset, leading to a concerning 110.6 passer rating against their defense – a stat that reflects poorly compared to all-time quarterback ratings in the league.
While acquiring Crosby could present value—he’s under contract until 2029 and could be a long-term investment—Hendrickson would require a renegotiation for any chance of retaining him beyond this season. Jones has indicated a willingness to trade one of the two first-round picks the team received in the Parsons deal, emphasizing the strategic advantage the team possesses as they navigate potential roster changes.
Despite their intent to fill the gaps through trades, the Cowboys are set to welcome DeMarvion Overshown back into the fold soon. Overshown, who recorded five sacks last season before sustaining an ACL injury, is poised to return in Week 11 and could provide an important boost to the defense.
As the deadline on November 4 looms, the focus remains on whether the Cowboys can successfully reinforce their defense. While there may be no immediate trade, the anticipated return of Overshown combined with strategic trades could lead to a revitalized Cowboys defense, fostering optimism as the season progresses.
