Initially, he even contemplated dismantling the institution of the Dalai Lama itself, believing this would eliminate a focal point for Beijing’s interference. In subsequent thoughts, he considered the possibility of transferring his spiritual authority to an adult while still alive, deviating from tradition to avoid the complications of selecting a young child as his reincarnation.
However, during a significant gathering in Dharamsala, India, as part of his 90th birthday celebrations, the Dalai Lama reaffirmed his commitment to tradition. He announced that the institution of the Dalai Lama will persist and that his successor will be chosen following the conventional process of reincarnation.
