Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is taking a leave of absence to return to Sweden for personal matters, as confirmed by head coach Lindy Ruff. Ruff mentioned that Dahlin has the full support of the team during this time and reassured fans that “everything is OK.”
The situation arose after Dahlin and his fiancée, Carolina, shared a deeply personal letter on September 19, detailing a traumatic ordeal they faced over the summer. While vacationing in France, Carolina experienced major heart failure, requiring multiple instances of CPR and hospitalization, where she was placed on life support for several weeks. She ultimately received a heart transplant while still in France.
“This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives, however, it is something that we have learned so much from,” Dahlin expressed in the letter. He emphasized the gratitude they feel for the support they have received and highlighted the importance of valuing life and loved ones.
Ruff expressed understanding of the difficult emotional toll this experience has taken on Dahlin, stating, “It’s been incredibly hard. Not easy. I don’t think you can describe it, and I don’t think you can feel what he’s feeling.” The coach reaffirmed the emotional weight of this situation, declaring it is “larger than hockey,” and emphasized that the team stands firmly behind Dahlin during this trying time.
In the current season, Dahlin has made notable contributions with nine points—one goal and eight assists—in 14 games. The former No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2018 NHL Draft has accumulated 369 points throughout his career, highlighting his significance to the Sabres.
As the team prepares to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, fans and teammates alike are hoping for a swift resolution to Dahlin’s personal matters, showcasing the resilience and support within the hockey community.
