On December 24, District Government offices in Washington, D.C. will close early at 2 p.m. in preparation for the Christmas Day holiday, which will see government operations ceased entirely on December 25. Despite these closures, essential services will still be available, particularly for individuals experiencing homelessness and those in need of mental health support.

A number of low-barrier shelters and overflow shelters will continue operating around the clock on both December 24 and December 25. This includes shelters for men, women, and the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring that vulnerable populations have a safe place to stay during the holidays.

Additionally, various mental health services will be accessible. The DC Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) encourages residents struggling with mental health or substance use issues to reach out at any time by calling 988 for immediate, confidential support.

While many city services will adjust their schedules, outdoor parks managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation will remain open for recreational activities. Notably, trash and recycling collections will be delayed, with services moving to Saturday to accommodate the holiday schedule.

In light of the season of giving and community support, this initiative demonstrates the city’s commitment to caring for its residents, especially the most vulnerable. The closure of many governmental services is a momentary adjustment, emphasizing the importance of community well-being during this festive period.

As the holidays approach, it is heartening to see a variety of resources made available, reaffirming the spirit of togetherness and support within the District. Residents are encouraged to utilize these services and reach out for assistance when needed.
