Numerous resources will remain accessible for residents during this time. Low-barrier shelters catering to individuals experiencing homelessness will operate 24/7, remaining open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Locations include the New York Avenue Men’s Shelter and the Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter, among others. Residents needing transportation to these shelters can reach out to the DC Shelter Hotline or the city’s call center for assistance.

For those facing mental health challenges, the DC Department of Behavioral Health is encouraging residents to reach out to the crisis hotline at 988 for free, confidential support. Additionally, the DC Stabilization Center will provide 24/7 emergency services for individuals experiencing substance use crises.
While most public services will halt, the Department of Parks and Recreation’s outdoor parks and athletic fields will remain open, allowing residents to enjoy seasonal activities.
However, the DC Department of Public Works will delay trash and recycling collection due to the holiday, with services shifting to later in the week. Parking enforcement will also pause in the afternoon on December 24.
Several facilities, including libraries and schools, will close early on December 24 and remain closed throughout Christmas Day, resuming normal hours on December 26.
This holiday season is characterized by a commitment to community welfare, with numerous resources available for those in need, highlighting the importance of support systems during festive times. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these services to ensure well-being through the holidays.
In summary, while many services will close to observe the holiday, the commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in D.C. remains strong, reflecting a community geared toward compassion and assistance during challenging times.
