Severe storms in the D.C. area led to significant flooding on Saturday evening, resulting in the rescue of at least 20 individuals from a building in Chevy Chase. The incident unfolded around 8:15 p.m. at a location on Meadowbrook Lane, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer. Emergency responders from Montgomery County and Maryland-National Capital Park Police worked together to coordinate evacuations while deploying the Swift Water Rescue team.

Those rescued were attending a graduation party at the location, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. The National Weather Service had issued a Flood Warning that lasted until 11:30 p.m. for key areas including D.C., Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, as well as Virginia’s Fairfax County. Reports indicated that various rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas were experiencing ongoing flooding.

In addition to the building rescue, Montgomery County’s Emergency Communications Center received around 100 service calls between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., prompting firefighters to conduct multiple water rescues from stranded vehicles in Potomac, Kensington, Silver Spring, and Takoma Park. One notable rescue involved a car trapped between Falls Road and Chapel Road at approximately 7:20 p.m. The occupant was extracted safely without injury.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue also reported extensive road closures due to flooding, including sections of Beach Drive and Sligo Creek Parkway, which were rendered impassable. Emergency crews are actively addressing the situation, and residents are advised to stay informed through local weather updates.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for severe weather and understanding the potential risks associated with flooded areas.
