Tropical Cyclone Urmil, although not making landfall, significantly impacted the Western Division of Fiji by bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding that disrupted daily life. As a precaution, authorities made the decision to close schools nationwide indefinitely due to the adverse weather conditions.

Heavy downpours wreaked havoc in various areas including Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi, prompting some residents to seek higher ground to avoid rising waters. Major town centers in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki were affected as floodwaters inundated shops and public areas, effectively cutting off access for many.

Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai reported that survey teams were dispatched to evaluate the damage while community leaders were tasked with monitoring their residents’ safety. He emphasized the unexpected severity of the rain that followed forecasts suggesting minimal impact from Urmil. “There is flooding in many of our low-lying areas, and the most important message from us to members of the public was not to make any unnecessary movement or travels,” he warned, urging people to remain indoors and heed weather advisories.

In Rakiraki, Naqoro advisory councillor Sami Ram noted that the flood-prone Naqoro flats became inaccessible by midday, leading to a complete lockdown of the town. “Hopefully this rain will stop by tomorrow,” he expressed.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed that all schools would remain closed today, following assessments from district education offices to ensure the safety of children and school communities. He encouraged school leaders and teachers to stay in touch with their management committees for ongoing updates and guidance during this challenging time.

The Fiji Meteorological Services reported that TC Urmil had moved away from Fiji waters as of last night, having been located approximately 670 kilometers south of Nadi at noon. The Category 2 cyclone was expected to exit Fiji’s area by 6 PM on the same day.

Despite the challenges posed by the cyclone, the swift response and coordination among community leaders and authorities demonstrate resilience and a collective effort to ensure the safety of those affected. As the region looks forward to improved weather conditions, hope remains for a quick recovery and restoration of normalcy.
