The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has notified its customers that recent heavy rains and substantial flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Urmil have significantly affected water supply operations, particularly in the Western Division. The relentless rain has resulted in flooding affecting various raw water sources and facilities, leading to increased turbidity levels and blocked intake screens, while also complicating access to vital treatment plants and pumping stations.

Key impacted locations include the Narara and Nakasia intakes, Qalau and Nasivi raw water pump stations, Waica intake, as well as Varaciva and Waiwai dams, and the Keiaysi River intake. As a result, water production in Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Sigatoka has been reduced, potentially leading to intermittent supply disruptions, lower water pressure, and in some instances, the necessity for water rationing.

However, WAF has indicated that the majority of major water treatment plants and distribution systems remain operational. Crews are actively monitoring the systems, managing production levels, and redirecting supply to ensure that essential areas continue to receive water. To support those affected, water carting services have been initiated for households, businesses, and essential services.

WAF explained that restoration efforts cannot commence in several areas until conditions are deemed safe, as ongoing adverse weather has created hazardous access routes. Teams are prepared to mobilize for clean-up and repairs as soon as the weather permits. Customers, particularly those in low-pressure and elevated areas within the Western Division, may continue to experience temporary service interruptions until the floodwaters dissipate and normal operations can resume.

In response to this situation, WAF has urged customers to conserve water and ensure they have adequate supplies for essential needs while recommending they maintain clean and covered water storage tanks. The authority also encourages community members to report any significant leaks or supply concerns through its customer service channels. WAF appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as teams work diligently to address the challenges posed by the severe weather and aim for a full recovery of water services. While the current circumstances are challenging, WAF is committed to restoring reliable water supply as soon as conditions allow.
