Tropical Cyclone Urmil is currently moving east-southeast at a speed of approximately 22 kilometers per hour (12 knots), creating perilous marine conditions over open waters. The cyclone is producing significant wave heights that can reach up to 6.7 meters (22 feet), which poses risks to maritime activities in the surrounding areas.

As of 5 AM today, Urmil, classified as a Category 2 cyclone, was situated about 480 kilometers southwest of Kadavu and continues to progress southeast, remaining south of the Fiji Group. The cyclone’s active rainbands and strong northwesterly winds are impacting the western and southern regions of the country.

The forecast predicts deteriorating wind conditions throughout the day. In the Western Division, including the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as Kadavu and adjacent smaller islands, strong north to north-west winds are anticipated, with average speeds around 45 kilometers per hour and gusts that could reach up to 75 kilometers per hour. In the Macuata and Bua provinces, winds are expected to start moderate but will strengthen as the day continues, with average speeds of 40 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour.

Maritime communities and those in coastal areas are strongly advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, as the seas are predicted to be rough to very rough due to the cyclone’s influence, creating hazardous conditions for local residents and marine operations. The weather patterns brought on by Urmil serve as a reminder of the powerful forces of nature and the importance of preparedness in the face of such storms.
