Residents of Matainoco Village in Buretu, Tailevu, can now take pride in their new cyclone-resilient ablution block, an essential improvement aimed at ensuring sanitation and safety during natural disasters. Officially unveiled yesterday by Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, the project represents an investment of $62,175.90.
Minister Ditoka emphasized the facility’s dual functionality, stating that it will not only meet daily sanitation needs but also provide a secure and hygienic environment for villagers during emergencies. “The objective is to provide a safe and resilient facility that ensures proper sanitation during extended stays caused by natural disasters or emergencies,” he explained.
The Minister noted the critical need for robust rural infrastructure that maintains community safety and access to essential services when faced with crises. This enhancement is part of a wider government initiative focused on constructing resilient and healthier communities across Fiji.
Timoci Maiwiriwiri, the Headman of Matainoco Village, expressed gratitude towards the Coalition Government for its investment, highlighting its role in protecting villagers from disease and significantly improving their overall well-being. “This project showcases the government’s commitment to rural communities and the health and dignity of our people,” he stated.
The new ablution block is not only a standalone improvement but is also indicative of ongoing efforts to bolster disaster preparedness in Fiji. Similar projects across various villages reflect the government’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure, fostering a sense of hope and security for the future.
Such initiatives are vital for empowering communities, helping them withstand and recover from disasters, and underscoring the importance of collaboration between local leaders and government agencies. In this regard, the completion of the ablution block in Matainoco Village marks a hopeful step towards building a resilient future for all Fijians.
