The residents of Matainoco Village in Buretu, Tailevu, have a new cyclone-resilient ablution block, a significant enhancement for sanitation and safety during natural disasters. This $62,175.90 project was officially inaugurated yesterday by Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.
Minister Ditoka emphasized that the newly constructed facility serves a dual purpose: it will be utilized for daily sanitation needs and also act as a secure and hygienic space for villagers during emergencies. “The objective is to provide a safe and resilient facility that ensures proper sanitation during extended stays caused by natural disasters or emergencies,” he stated.
The Minister highlighted the importance of fostering durable rural infrastructure to maintain community protection and access to essential services during crises.
Timoci Maiwiriwiri, the Headman of Matainoco Village, expressed gratitude towards the Coalition Government for this investment, noting that the facility will aid in protecting villagers from diseases while significantly improving their overall well-being. “This project showcases the government’s commitment to rural communities and the health and dignity of our people,” he remarked.
The new ablution block contributes to the government’s ongoing initiative to build more resilient and healthier communities across Fiji, aiming to ensure that all residents, regardless of age, have access to vital sanitation services. The focus on enhancing infrastructure reflects a broader commitment evident in similar projects throughout Fiji, enhancing disaster preparedness in more villages, helping to build a sense of hope and security for the future.
Such investments are crucial for enabling communities to withstand and recover from natural disasters, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between local leaders and government agencies in building a more resilient future for all Fijians.
