A serious incident occurred early Thursday morning in Bellevue, Nashville, when a 63-year-old man riding an electric bicycle was struck by a vehicle on Old Hickory Boulevard. The accident took place around 5 a.m. in the 600 block, near McKay’s bookstore.

The cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries and has since been transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition. According to Metro police, the preliminary investigation revealed that a 59-year-old man driving a Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on Old Hickory Boulevard when he collided with the cyclist, who was riding in the same lane and direction.

The driver reported that he was momentarily distracted while adjusting the temperature controls in his car just prior to the impact. There was no indication of impairment from either the cyclist or the driver at the scene, and charges are being reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office.

Following the accident, Old Hickory Boulevard was temporarily closed to allow for the investigation, reopening to traffic around 7:30 a.m.

This situation highlights the critical need for increased awareness and caution when sharing roadways, especially as the popularity of electric bicycles continues to rise. Motorists and cyclists alike must remain vigilant to ensure safety for all road users. As developments unfold, further updates will be provided as this story progresses.
