The tragic case of Moriah Wilson, a promising professional cyclist, continues to resonate within the cycling community following her untimely death in May 2022, just days before a major competition in Austin, Texas. The investigation initially focused on her former boyfriend Colin Strickland but soon turned to his girlfriend, Kaitlin Armstrong, who was fueled by jealousy over Strickland’s prior relationship with Wilson.

Armstrong’s troubled past, marked by family dysfunction and trauma, shaped her life in significant ways. Raised near Detroit and later moving to Austin, she pursued careers in finance and yoga, especially after meeting Strickland, a talented cyclist. Their relationship was rocky, characterized by breakups and reconciliations, which intensified Armstrong’s jealousy when Strickland rekindled a connection with Wilson.

On May 11, 2022, Armstrong confronted Wilson at a friend’s apartment and shot her, leading to a massive investigation. Law enforcement connected her to the crime through surveillance footage of her vehicle near the scene; however, due to insufficient initial evidence, she was released after questioning. In a desperate attempt to evade the law, Armstrong fled to Costa Rica for over a month, living under assumed names in various locations until authorities captured her after she responded to a job posting that led them to her.

In November 2023, Armstrong’s trial commenced, culminating in her conviction for first-degree murder, resulting in a harsh sentence of 90 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Despite her appeal, claiming inadequate representation and personal circumstances during her arrest, she faced continuous setbacks. Moriah Wilson’s family later sought justice through civil litigation, winning a substantial judgment against Armstrong.

As of now, Armstrong is incarcerated in Texas with a parole eligibility date set for 2052. This case highlights the long-lasting impacts of jealousy and mental health struggles upon individuals and communities. It also serves as a reminder of the precious lives lost and the painful legacies they leave behind. The cycling community, while mourning Wilson, remains hopeful that justice has been served, honoring her talent and spirit.
